Film: Doctor G

Language: Hindi

Director: Anubhuti Kashyap

Actors: Ayushmann Khurrana, Rakul Preet Singh

A fun filled, down to earth movie which portrays the life and the catharsis of  Dr Uday Gupta who is struck with gynaecology specialization instead of ortho.

A very “Ayushman Khurana” movie which explores yet another aspect of the middle-class youngsters let adrift by the society as the whole. Storyline is of a average middle class boy brought up in a patriarchal society which has taken all pains to embolden and educate the daughters but never realized that boys too have to be groomed too.

The movie follows the “coming of age” of a Doctor who finds the stone walling of the gynaecological department matching his own prejudices. As he meanders through the womanhood, their friendship and sexuality, he realizes that his own discernment might waver but his steadfastness would not. The bull headedness is later portrayed in many incidents where he would always prioritize  the safety of the patients above everything.

The comedy weaved through the movie is natural and often profound. In one scene Kurrana exclaims in frustration that if  Richa, his girlfriend likes watching movies, talking and even studying with her friend, then why not get done with sex too with Vishal? Pat came his friend’s reply that though he too liked watching movies and talking with Kurrana, never has the thought of having sex crossed his mind- A very poignant point hits home rather swiftly!

The characters of his mother, his friend and the classmates all contribute substantially to the overall sarcastic yet very humorous take on the issues faced by women. The  down to earth tone of the movie is commendable. Even the confrontation of Rakul Preet’s fiancé with Kurrana  whiffs of “day to day” life . The only serious incident of the movie where the life of a 17 year old was at stake, was directed very poignantly and realistically.

GOOD TO GO?

The movie on the whole is an entertaining fest with a very relatable delivery to today’s youngsters caught between the rapidly westernizing workplace and patriarchal upbringing.

So summing up, should you be watching the movies? A big Yes.

Whom should you be watching it with? Friends or spouse or soon to be spouse or date.

What would you be coming out with? Big smiles and retake on many of our ideas.
